Model Futures is holding a one-day Introduction to MODAF Course the day before the IET seminar on Enterprise Architecture Frameworks.
The course is aimed at those who want to understand what MODAF is all about from first principles. The course is based around the latest version of MODAF (v1.2) and includes an introduction to the new Service-Oriented views.
The modules (in order) are:
- EA Introduction – what is Enterprise
Architecture and what are the benefits of an EA approach ? This module
stresses the need to integrate business and technical information to
produce a coherent model of the enterprise that can support decision
making in change programmes.
- Architecture Frameworks – describes the need for standards such as MODAF
in presenting information about the enterprise to different
stakeholders. Some history will also be presented, including Zachman
and DoDAF.
- MODAF Introduction – this brief introduction describes how MODAF can be used in different scenarios – acquisition, business change, ops planning, etc. The MODAF
viewpoints are covered in broad terms, indicating which stakeholders
are interested in each viewpoint, and how the three key architectural
viewpoints fit together. Trainees will also learn how the acquisition
and standards views support the core architectural information.
- What is a Meta-Model ? – without getting too technical, this module explains how the M3 and MODAF Ontology support MODAF. Trainees are taught that MODAF
is underpinned by a standard set of modelling elements and allowable
relationships. The key relationships (i.e. structure-to-behaviour, and
those which cross viewpoint boundaries) will be highlighted.
- Quick Architectural Walk-Thru – a single themed example of how a MODAF
architecture is put together, starting with statement of purpose for
the enterprise (enterprise goals) & capabilities. The trainees are
then shown how to take the capabilities and show how these interact in
operational architecture (logical nodes and operational activities).
Finally, the trainees are shown how resource specifications are
developed to provide the solution architecture to the operational
requirements.
- Key MODAF Views – trainees will learn how to read the key structural and behavioural models in MODAF – StVs 1/2/4, OVs 2/4/5, SVs 1,2,4. In addition, the programmatic views will be covered – StV-3 & AcV-2.
SOA in MODAF – presenting the basics of the NATO/MOD view of Service Oriented Architectures, with some brief SOA models which conform to the MODAF spec. This module is really aimed at explaining how SOA supports the goals of NEC rather than training anyone to develop service-oriented architectures.
